Barber cutting a client's hair with clippers in a barbershop

Mannequins vs Live Models: The Fastest Way to Learn a Fade

November 01, 2026

Short answer: Live models. A mannequin head can help you get used to holding clippers, but its hair does not grow in real patterns and it cannot move or talk. Real heads teach pressure, cowlicks, skin and head shape. CADMEN fade classes are built on live models, arranged for you, in Mississauga, Calgary and Montreal.

What can you practise on a mannequin?

A mannequin head is useful at home for the basics:

  • Holding the clippers and changing guards.
  • Sectioning the hair.
  • Comb and clipper control.

What can't a mannequin teach you?

Mannequin hair is synthetic and the skin is fake. You cannot learn:

  • Pressure. How hard to press on a real scalp.
  • Growth patterns. Real hair grows in swirls and cowlicks that change how you fade.
  • Texture. Straight, wavy, curly and coily hair each fade differently.
  • Head shape. Every head has bumps and flat spots you have to blend around.
  • Skin. Birthmarks, sensitive spots and razor work.
  • The client. Real people move, talk and tell you what they want.

Why do live models make you learn faster?

Every new head is a new problem to solve. Cutting live models back to back for two days, with different textures and head shapes, gives your hands the variety they will meet with real clients. An educator beside you corrects each cut while it is happening.

Research on how people learn physical skills points the same way. K. Anders Ericsson and colleagues, writing in Psychological Review in 1993, found that top performers built their skill through deliberate practice: focused repetitions with a teacher giving feedback right away. A 2002 study in the journal Neuron by Matthew Walker and colleagues found that people performed a newly practised motor skill faster after a night of sleep, with no extra practice. A two-day class puts a night of sleep between day one and day two.

How do you practise barbering without clients?

  • Offer cuts to friends, family and coworkers right after your class.
  • Take before and after photos of every cut.
  • Ask for honest feedback and book them back in a few weeks.
  • Use a mannequin between real cuts to drill clipper control.

Next step: how to get your first clients as a new barber.

What does a live-model fade class look like?

The CADMEN fade course runs two days. The educator demonstrates, then you cut live models while the educator watches, corrects and shows you again. Classes are one to three students. Models are arranged for you, and you leave with before and after photos and video of your work. See how the two-day method works.

Where can you take hands-on barber classes?

CADMEN teaches in three cities. Every location uses the same CADMEN curriculum, keeps classes small and teaches inside a real working barbershop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it better to learn barbering on mannequins or real people?

Real people. Mannequins help with clipper handling, but live models teach pressure, growth patterns, texture and head shape.

Can you learn to fade on a mannequin?

You can practise the motions. Mannequin hair does not grow in real patterns, so blending on a real head is a different skill.

Do I need to bring my own model?

No. Live models are arranged for CADMEN fade training.

How do I practise barbering without clients?

Cut friends, family and coworkers, photograph every cut, ask for feedback and book them back. Use a mannequin between real cuts for clipper control.

What hair types will I cut in class?

Live models with different hair textures and head shapes, like the real clients you will meet.
