5 Best Haircuts for Men with

Early Hair Thinning

Losing your hair is never a good feeling, most men tend to feel self-conscious about it. Some men decide to completely shave off their heads or constantly wear a hat. One of the most common insecurities men face is hair thinning; for some men, it starts as early as in their 20s. The loss of confidence really starts to affect the way men do their hair and the types of hair cuts they get. Men start to worry about how they will be perceived by friends, family, and colleagues. Hair thinning should not be the cause of self distraughtness, and it should not limit men to have to continuously cover their heads. CADMEN Barbershop has compiled a list of the top 5 best haircuts for men experiencing early hair loss.

Buzz Cut Guard Sizes: What Each Length Looks Like and How to Choose the Right One

A buzz cut is the most straightforward haircut a barber performs, but clients who request one often have no idea what guard number they want and no way to describe it without a reference. The client who says "short" gets whatever the barber defaults to; the client who says "a 2 on top and shorter on the sides" gets something precise. Knowing the guard-to-length conversion and using it in the consultation produces consistent results and eliminates the most common cause of client dissatisfaction on buzz cuts: the haircut was shorter or longer than expected.

Standard Guard Numbers and Lengths

Guard NumberLength (approx.)Visual Description
0 (no guard / bare blade)0 to 0.5 mmNear skin, very faint stubble
0.51.5 mmStubble, faint hair coverage
13 mmVery short but hair is visible
1.54.5 mmShort with some texture visible
26 mmShort buzz, most common buzz cut length
39.5 mmCrew cut length, clearly visible hair
412.5 mmShort but hair has real presence

Guard lengths vary slightly between clipper brands. The figures above are approximate and apply to most professional clipper brands.

The Most Requested Buzz Cut Lengths

A guard 2 all over is the standard buzz cut request: short but not intimidatingly so, requires no product, and grows out evenly. A guard 1.5 is for clients who want a shorter result without going to near-skin. A guard 3 on top with a taper or fade on the sides is more of a crew cut variation than a traditional buzz cut; this is often what clients mean when they say "short on the sides, a little longer on top."

Face and Head Shape Considerations

A buzz cut removes the length variation that a traditional haircut uses to compensate for face shape. The result is that head shape and face shape have more visual impact on a buzz cut than on any other style. Clients with prominent features, a very round face, or a non-round skull shape should understand this before the cut. For clients who are unsure, suggesting a guard 2 as a starting point (rather than going shorter) leaves room to go shorter if they want more; removing more length after a guard-2 result is possible, adding it back is not.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best buzz cut length for a round face?

A slightly longer buzz cut (guard 3 or 4) on top with shorter sides and back adds visual height that counteracts the width-to-height ratio of a round face. A uniform short buzz (guard 1 or 2 all over) on a round face emphasizes the roundness by providing no vertical visual contrast. If the client is set on a short uniform buzz, it is worth noting the effect; if they are open to variation, a subtle taper version of the buzz gives a cleaner result on a round face shape.
